To begin our year of studying the evolution of the English Language through literature, we will start with the Sea of Stories. While we will soon explore the oldest texts in English and travel with it through Shakespeare, Victorian England, and post-modern English, we will begin with a more contemporary work: Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salmon Rushdie. by beginning with this book, we will begin to explore the ideas of
censorship and the value of Storytelling in our society. This book, while very fantastical and imaginative, is ridden with symbols and metaphors that challenge our understanding of modern day archetypes stories. Our first unit together is designed to ask the questions "What is British Literature?" Why does it matter?" and "What are the use of stories that aren't even true?".
